National forests to fill seasonal jobs

Local residents are encouraged to apply for seasonal jobs in Wisconsin’s Chequamegon-Nicolet and Michigan’s Ottawa national forests.

Four of the jobs — one forestry and three recreation positions — will be based at the U.S. Forest Service’s Lakewood office in Oconto County.

Interested applicants must apply online at usajobs.gov. Job announcements and descriptions will be available beginning Feb. 20.

• Bruce G. Cornelius, 39, Neopit, pleaded no contest Oct. 20 to operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated (fifth offense), four counts of felony bail jumping, two misdemeanor charges of operating while revoked and a misdemeanor count of disorderly conduct. Judge Katherine Sloma sentenced him Feb. 9 to three years in prison followed by five years of extended supervision with conditions.

• Ivan Anthony Huff, 28, a Green Bay man serving a sentence at Jackson Correctional Institution in Black River Falls, pleaded no contest Dec. 12 to fleeing an officer in his vehicle. Judge Jay Conley sentenced him Feb. 9 to an additional one year in prison followed by two more years of extended supervision.

County starting foreclosures on 5 properties

Members of the Shawano County Public Property Committee voted Feb. 12 to begin the process of foreclosing on five parcels after owners refusal to pay back taxes and special assessments.

There are two lots on Ebert Street in Gresham, one on Red Lake Court in Gresham, one on Fourth Street in Mattoon and one on Mission Street in Wittenberg.

Rec center soliciting art, planning tours

The recreated Shawano Recreation Center is still months from being open to the public, but plans are in the works to give the community a chance to contribute to its beauty. Interested residents can also take a sneak peek at what’s been completed so far in the year-long project that started in June 2025.
