Editor’s note: Trick-or-treating and other Halloween festivities are barely in our memories when many start to think about, talk about and plan for Christmas. Often, Thanksgiving seems almost forgotten, sandwiches between a pair of major retail holidays that simply overshadow the fourth Thursday in November.

I came across a humorous story about an atheist professor who was in the woods admiring the magnificence of evolution when a grizzly bear came charging out of the bushes. The professor ran for his life until he tripped and fell. As the bear was about to attack, the terrified professor cried out, “Oh my God, help me!”

Gratitude is a powerful force, capable of transforming our darkest days into lessons of light and our biggest struggles into stepping stones toward success. Reflecting on what I’m thankful for, my heart swells with appreciation for the community that believed in me even when I couldn’t believe in myself.

Over Labor Day weekend, I headed to the Shawano County Fairgrounds to watch my niece show cattle.

It was a homecoming of sorts. When I was her age, I spent a long weekend in the same barns, caring for and showing dairy cattle. 4-H played an important role in developing me into an adult, teaching me leadership, hard work and community service. It also led to strong bonds with other 4-H kids and families.

As I reflect on this season of thanksgiving, I am reminded of how much I have to be grateful for. Life moves quickly between work, family, coaching and countless events, but this time of year allows me to pause and truly appreciate the blessings in my life.

Putting thoughts onto paper is a task I find both enjoyable and intimidating. To share your visions and your perspective is powerful. It is an act of vulnerability and courage.
