The month of January seemed to drag on and on, and I couldn’t wait to turn the calendar to February. Well, in retrospect, January was a lot nicer weather wise than what February has been.
It seems I never learn. Every year, I get to thinking that the thermometer will slowly rise as February arrives. Sure, I know that dips are possible, perhaps storms, but these constant below-zero nights, and single-digit days are wearing out their welcome.
Occasionally there is a calm, sunny, 20-something degree day, with snow melting, and that makes the spring fever come to the forefront. Then we plunge back down, and it’s time to bundle up again.
If my recollection is correct, I believe that the past two years were pretty much the same. Perhaps this is normal? Can’t be, as every day when I watch the forecast, they are saying that normal should be the high 20s, not single digits. Then again, what really is normal? For them, it is a percentage of what temperatures of the past years were.
All I know is that the calendar is going to switch to March tomorrow, and in a week, daylight saving time will begin, and spring begins on March 20. The only problem with that is it seems the weather doesn’t know about daylight saving time, nor when spring begins.
Somehow, those jet streams that are bringing the arctic air down to us, and further south, have to change before the warmth will show up. In fact, some of our cold days, saw parts of Alaska with 40-degree highs.
I recently took one of those silly quizzes on Facebook, which asked in which state you should live. The result for me was Alaska. I only visited Alaska one time, but I sometimes think that if I were to run away from home, I would go to Alaska. Then I remember the long dark days of winter up there. While I don’t mind a little winter, I do dislike the darkness of winter even here. Up there it would be worse. Of course, I would be missing my friends and family.
What March will bring remains to be seen. March is a changeable, windy month when anything can happen. I think it is fitting that I was born in March, as my brain, emotions and such can also be changeable and uncertain.
One thing I am looking forward to is March Madness. I am not sure why it took me so long, but I have begun to watch the Wisconsin Badgers play basketball. High schools will also be in their March Madness this month, both girls and boys. Wrestlers have already begun the quest for the best.
Meanwhile, those who tap maple trees for that sweet taste of spring are busy in preparation, so that when the Wisconsin weather breaks, they can start tapping. Many years there are only a precious few perfect days for the sap run, while others have a longer time.
Will March come in like a lion or a lamb? A lamb sounds pretty good at this time.
