Lent, a time of prayer and preparation for Easter, will begin on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 18. St. John Lutheran Church, Townsend, invites the community to its 8 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Ash Wednesday services, which will include the imposition of ashes and Holy Communion.
The Ash Wednesday focus is “Receive Justification: The Pharisee and the Tax Collector,” Luke 18:9-14.
Devotional services will continue at 5:30 p.m. Wednesdays for five weeks through the Lenten season. Each service in this series focuses on a biblical parable that connects to Lenten themes: Feb. 25, “Receive the Word: The Sower and the Seed,” Matthew 13:1-8, 18-23; March 4, “Receive the Treasure: The Hidden Treasure and the Priceless Pearl,” Matthew 13:44-46; March 11,”Receive Mercy: The Good Samaritan,” Luke 10: 25-37; March 18, “Receive Grace: The Workers in the Vineyard,” Matthew 20:1-16; and March 25, “Receive Forgiveness: The Prodigal Son,” Luke 15:11-32.
Within each parable’s plot is woven a message about what individuals receive through the crucified Christ. Parishioners can take the message with them to enrich their own stories of faith in Jesus as they journey through Lent.
The community is also invited to weekend worship services at 5:30 p.m. Saturdays and 9 a.m. Sundays. Coffee, fellowship and Bible study follow the Sunday service. All are welcome.
