Taylor Kohls finished what two of her Gillett Secondary School teammates started in a 62-29 rout of nonconference opponent Goodman/Pembine in girls basketball action Friday.
The 5-foot-11 senior scored a career-high 20 points, but was quiet in the first quarter as senior Rebecca Wolf and freshman Taylor Yonker led the Tigers to a 16-11 lead.
Wolfe made three baskets and Yonker scored one from beyond the arc and another on a baseline jumper in the opening quarter. Held to two points in the period, Kohls got rolling in the second and third quarters with eight and six points, respectively.
Coach Justin Daul credited patience and a strong passing game for Kohls’ success.
“It was all hard work and entry passes,” Daul said. “We knew coming in that teams were going to focus two or three players on her. We need to be patient, and she needs to be patient.”
Kohls scored 10 points in the low post in the second and third quarters. She also drew fouls and converted all four of her free throws.
Goodman/Pembine coach Stefanie Goyak said the combination of Kohls and 6-foot sophomore Victoria Loberger were too much for the youthful Patriots, who were outscored 17-3 in the final period.
“They had girls much taller than us, much stronger than us and we did our best to defend them,” Goyak said.
Junior 5-9 guard Claire Goyak led Goodman/Pembine (0-16, 0-11 Northern Lakes) with 11 points.
Senior guard Amber Francois scored six of her 10 points in the final period for Gillett (12-5, 10-1 Marinette and Oconto).
