Madden taught as much as he learned

If you’ve spent any time in northeast Wisconsin’s Native communities, then you’ve likely met Larry Patrick Madden. Known to many by the English translation of his Mohican name Maxkweeno, Madden’s presence induced smiles and proclamations of, “The Bear Man!”

Conversations anchor inter-tribal leadership summit

There were important themes within the keynotes from last month’s 2025 Seven Generation Inter-Tribal Leadership Summit. Whether intended or not, they collectively reminded me of something rhetoric scholar Kenneth Burke wrote about what is referred to as the “unending conversation.”

Lecture brings message of Sámi reclamation to CMN

Dr. Silje Solheim Karlsen’s message traveled a great distance to connect with the College of Menominee Nation.

A professor of Nordic literature at the Arctic University of Norway, as well as an adjunct professor at the Sámi University of Applied Sciences, Karlsen is “particularly interested in decolonizing teaching practices and pedagogy related to teaching.” Last month, she presented a public lecture on recent Sámi publications.

There’s more behind stories of people’s lives
If asked to share stories about someone you idolize, which would you tell? Some people would speak about a performer who captivates an audience. Others would highlight an athlete who rises to a challenge. Some might discuss a politician who champions legislation that makes life better for their constituents.

It adds up for CMN faculty member of the year
Math has been called many things, some of which can’t be printed in this column. Yet, CMN’s faculty of the year awardee Audra Castonia sees the subject as an attractive means to enrich her students’ lives. “I believe in the beauty of mathematics that surrounds us and the power of numbers to shape our everyday lives,” she said.
