Workshop to help gardeners get most out of spaces

The University of Wisconsin-Madison Division of Extension, in partnership with the Oconto Falls Community Garden, is conducting a workshop designed to help gardeners get the most out of their garden spaces.

The workshop will take place at 6 p.m. April 23 at the Oconto Falls Community Garden, 831 S. Main St., Oconto Falls.

Sacred Heart preschoolers measure ‘worms’

Callaway Marquardt, a 3-year-old preschooler at Sacred Heart Catholic School, creates a worm using colorful cubes and bead strings to practice early measurement skills. The activity involved math development, fine motor skills and language growth.

Study links alcohol to risk of cancer

Public health leaders continue to raise awareness about alcohol’s link to cancer, following a 2025 U.S. Surgeon General advisory that identified alcohol as a leading preventable cause of cancer in the United States.

The advisory also calls for updated alcohol warning labels to better inform consumers about cancer risk. Yet despite extensive research, many Americans remain unaware of alcohol’s link to cancer.

Mathison receives volunteer award

Matty Mathison, center, of Shawano, was presented with AARP Wisconsin’s top statewide volunteer award for 2025 in a ceremony March 31 at the Shawano Lake County Park pavilion. Mathison is a dedicated advocate for the creation, preservation and expansion of trail systems throughout Shawano County.
