Now that the calendar is about to turn to the month of June, and the weather has seemed to catch up to the actual season, it feels like summer has arrived.
With one of my granddaughters playing softball for Tigerton High School, I went through a whole series of weather going to games during the past two months. There was rain, quite often wind, and only the last two were warm with no jacket required. Prior to those, I usually wore at least two jackets, with a spare just in case, and even a blanket, which was often needed. Now that their season is ended, I can cross that off my scribbled-on calendar.
It seems the calendar this year does not slow down. Each day is filled with two or more items to be done. Add to it confirmations, and now graduations, and the chaos continues. Plus, now that June has arrived, there are two weddings thrown into the loop, both requiring overnight stays.
Meanwhile, I am still trying to get things taken care of around the yard. While I won’t plant as many flowers as I did in past years, I do have plans to put in more than what has been done. On Memorial Day, I planted some flowers, and some vegetable plants and seeds. Not wanting to overdo with my aching arms and shoulders, I have been limiting my time at digging.
Today, of course, I bought more potting soil and seeds. Well, I can remember years in the past where I didn’t get my garden planted until mid-June. Little by little, I will get things done.
Meanwhile, for those who read my column a couple of weeks back and are wondering how my arms and shoulders are doing now that I got a different mattress: I can only say that it seems to be a little better. I need to do some more doctoring with it, just don’t know when I can fit it in at the moment.
The wedding quilt I was working on earlier this year is back from the quilter, and I am working on the binding. I have quilting friends who have offered to help with the hand stitching of the binding, but need to find a day for that, also.
Right now I am waiting for July. So far I only have one thing written in, and that is Aunt Gertie’s 100th birthday party. Of course, she is having a pizza party, with some other food the ladies at her church will furnish. Yes, July sounds great at this point. What a wonderful time to celebrate with my aunt, and get to see so many of my relatives that I don’t see very often.
Of course, by the time July arrives, I am sure the days will be filling up also. One thing, no more summer recreation softball games to attend, nor Little League games. After all, those grandchildren keep getting older and are past that stage by now. I am not saying I won’t miss attending the games, but that will free me up from sitting out in the hot sun of summer.
So, the summer activities are just getting into full swing. Right now, I am hoping the swing will slow down a bit.
