John Pinkart of the University of Wisconsin-Extension demonstrated how to prune fruit trees April 16, as part of the Seeds 2 Service after school program at Gillett School. Thirty-two second- through sixth-grade students participated.
The Seeds 2 Service students planted more than a dozen fruit trees in and around the school garden in 2014 and will plant more around the school property this year.
Seeds 2 Service is funded through a grant from Basic Needs Giving Partnership of the Greater Green Bay Community Foundation, including U.S. Venture Open Fund for Basic Needs of the Greater Green Bay Community Foundation, the J.J. Keller Foundation and community donors.
After the pruning demonstration, students went to work opening up trails in the school woods and preparing the school garden for planting by raking and hauling dirt and mulch. They also set up a bird feeding station.
Seeds 2 Service teaches students basic nutrition and the art of gardening. The Gillett School Garden was established in 2014 behind the elementary school.
