The severe storm that hit Shawano on Aug. 21 took down and damaged many trees, including the ones in Sandy Carlson‘s yard.
When Carlson asked Pat Anderson, who used to live by her, for help cleaning up, Anderson found a way to help not only Carlson but also many more people, turning the destruction into something good.
Carlson, who lives just south of Aarrowcast, had a couple tops of trees fall on her home.
“I didn’t hear any crashing,“ said Carlson, who was sitting in her living room at the time.
But when she went outside she saw the damage to the trees and her house.
Anderson trimmed the limbs and pulled a tree off her home, cutting firewood that he planned to give away because Carlson didn’t want it.
Then Anderson took a walk in the 20 acres of woods owned by Aarrowcast behind Carlson’s home. He saw many trees that came down during the storm, along with other trees that were either damaged or had been on the ground before.
“I didn’t want to see the wood go to waste,” said Anderson, who works at TimberPro.
He told Carlson it would be nice to could cut firewood and donate it to families. Carlson called Mike Mathie, environmental and safety director at Aarrowcast.
Mathie liked the idea and checked with the company’s lawyer before giving the go-ahead.
“That was really gracious of them to do that,” Carlson said.
“We’re just happy to help out,” Mathie said. “They’re doing all the work. We’re just providing the material.”
Rory Burns, Anderson’s co-worker, has a splitter and other equipment.
“I cut a lot of firewood,” Burns said.
The guys figure it will be a couple of months of work and are looking forward to donating the wood.
“I got a pretty nice life and I figured people need help,” Anderson said.
