Using speed and defense, the Shawano Community High School girls basketball team rolled to a 56-18 win over Green Bay West in a nonconference game Monday in Shawano.
The win gives the Hawks a three-game winning streak, after an 0-5 start, heading into the winter break.
“It just took a little confidence,” Shawano coach Ryan Koenig said of the winning streak. “Now you can see it just boiling. They’re ready to go. I really wish we weren’t in a break. I wish we could keep playing.”
The Hawks (3-5, 2-3 Bay Conference) used the nonconference game to experiment with an all-guard lineup to start the game. It worked, as Shawano jumped out to a 12-2 lead.
“We went five guards to start, just to see what we could do, how fast we could play,” Koenig said. “This is a nonconference game. We wanted to try some different things.”
Teagan Monfils, a 5-foot-8 junior guard, led the way with six first-quarter points.
Sara Hokenstad, a 5-7 junior guard, exploded for 10 points in the second quarter. She would add a 3-pointer in the fourth quarter for a game-high 13 points.
“She had a really good night,” Koenig said. “Took it to the basket that second quarter, just drove, drove, drove. Things open up when you do that. In the second half, she hit a 3 because they all sank on her.”
Monfils and junior guard Sydney Schreiber, who hit a pair of 3-pointers in the third quarter, finished with eight points each.
Senior forward Courtney Vomastic and junior forward Erika Dunnam had six rebounds each.
Up 37-14 at halftime, the Hawks committed to holding West (0-8, 0-4 Fox River Classic) to 20 points. Shawano gave up a pair of free throws and a single basket in the second half.
“We wanted to hold them to 20 for the game,” Koenig said. “We could only give up six points, and they only gave up four. The girls really responded to the challenge. … The more challenges I give them, the more they are responding in a positive.”
Shawano put West on the schedule to get ready for next year when the Wildcats join the Bay Conference.
“It gives us a good feel for them, lets the coaches meet and everything,” Koenig said. “Just a good thing to do.”
