The Shawano Community High School girls golf team is young, with four juniors and a freshman comprising the varsity squad.
So coach Dean Kugler just wanted to see the team improve as the season went on.
“They have done a really good job of plugging away and trying to get better,” Kugler said after Monday’s Green Bay Notre Dame Triton Invite at Thornberry Creek at Oneida. “Our goal all year has been to get a little bit better.”
Kugler said Monday was the culmination of that goal for the team.
“We’ve gotten better every single time,” he said. “We’re playing a harder course and we’re shooting the same scores. So that is getting better.”
Notre Dame Blue won the meet with a score of 326. Verona’s Jessica Reinecke, who shot a 74, was the medalist.
Shawano finished 20th out of 24 teams with a team score of 439. Brianna Zook, a freshman, led Shawano with a round of 105.
“She keeps getting better and better,” Kugler said. “So do all the girls.”
Juniors Julia Beck (109), Sydney Schreiber (111), Emily Smith (114) and Gabby Krueger (130) all logged scores they’re used to seeing on easier courses.
“We’re content with the fact that they weren’t blown away by this course. It’s a difficult course,” Kugler said. “Everyone is going to be back next year. It’ll be fine, and they’ll have all this experience behind them.”
The Hawks also will be able to draw on Monday’s experience when they return to Thornberry Creek on Oct. 1 for the WIAA Division 1 regional tournament.
At the regional, the top four teams and top four individuals not on a top-four team will advance to sectionals, which will be held Oct. 7 at Royal Scot Golf Course in New Franken.
