I have been hearing reports of robins sighted and geese heading north, and some have even seen sandhill cranes. The snow seems to be disappearing, and the promise of warmer weather is on the horizon.
April will sneak up before we know it, and I believe that most of us are more than ready. The old saying “March winds and April showers bring May flowers” was never more true for the winds of March. We are about to find out what April has in store, and I will be anxious to see May flowers bursting forth.
I am also ready for some spring sports. Baseball, softball and track will be starting at area high schools. The sound of the crack of a bat on a ball is the music of spring.
Farmers are busy making sure their equipment is in good working order, as well as making plans for what to plant where. The earth seems to come alive with the advent of spring and warmer weather.
There are those of us who love to get down and dirty playing in the dirt, planting things that either bloom and bring beauty, or bring forth food that adds flavor to our diets and nutrients to our bodies.
I know. I am getting a bit ahead of myself in thinking about gardening. I am sure that some are carefully tending budding tomato plants and the like. I did that a few years ago and enjoyed it, but somehow, never got around to repeating the process. I recall how much fun it was to see the seeds sprout, and the seedlings grow to being transplanted outside.
Of course, with all of the things we are looking forward to with spring and summer, there are the less desirable aspects also. Mosquitoes, ticks, gnats will all come to life, and soon our complaints will be about those.
My birthday passed as a day filled with fun and visiting. It was great sharing the day with so many of my family. The day went fast, although it took me three days to clean the clutter in my house and prepare food for the occasion.
It was my birthday, so I made what I wanted. We had hot pork sandwiches, as well as sloppy joes. There were raw vegetables and dip, and nacho chips, with dip for that, too.
I debated dessert for a couple of days, and then decided to make one regular angel food cake and turn another one into cupcakes. Along with the angel cake, I had to have devils food cake also. After all, I do like chocolate.
It took another three days to get everything cleaned up and put where it belongs. Once again I have gone back to work on the wedding quilt.
I spent part of the day making soup at church. It is a simple barley vegetable soup with some hamburger. Nothing fancy. The recipe is found on the barley box, but I must say, it is tasty, and always seems to go over very well.
Right now, I am on a robin watch. I haven’t seen one yet, but I know they are out there.
