Shawano Community High School added three members to its athletic hall of fame as part of its homecoming festivities Saturday.
The inductees were George Bowan, Class of 1938; Tim McGuire, Class of 1961, and Carol (Duquain) Schils, Class of 1973.
Ron Bowan accepted the honor on behalf of his father, who is deceased.
George Bowan participated in basketball, track and field and football.
In track, Bowan was part of the 1936 team that earned conference, district and state titles. In 1938 he was the individual state board jump champion and helped the team finish second at state. In 1938 he was also part of the Shawano football team that went undefeated, and a defense that did not allow a score in conference play.
Bowan also excelled at golf, competing on the Shawano Club Golf team. Later in life he won several of the area’s regional tournaments.
McGuire earned eight varsity letters while participating in football, basketball and track and field from 1957-61.
McGuire was a senior on the 1961 Shawano boys basketball team that went to state. He averaged 20 points per game in the tournament, though Shawano lost to No. 1 Waukesha, 88-86, in a game that would a state scoring record that lasted for 50 years.
In track, McGuire went to the state finals in the 880-yard relay and held the school’s 220-yard dash record.
McGuire was the football team’s captain his senior year.
Schils, nicknamed “Cookie,” competed in volleyball and track as a four-year member of the Girls Athletic Association.
Schils and her volleyball teammates won the first-ever state volleyball team championship in Wisconsin. She joined her coach, Matty Mathison, in the hall of fame.
In track, Schils competed in the high jump at the 1973 state track meet.
The inductees were treated to breakfast Saturday and featured in the homecoming parade. A dedication ceremony was held in the SCHS commons, and they were recognized before the Hawks’ homecoming football game against Luxemburg-Casco.
