Pre-demolition work has begun on the former Country Store building on South Main Street to make way for Family Dollar’s move from East Green Bay Street.
“They’re cleaning it up. Asbestos remediation, stuff like that,” Shawano Building Inspector Mike Miller said.
Miller said he was not aware of any time line for the project. A demolition permit for the old building hasn’t been issued, but a building permit for the new building has.
“We’re excited that’s for sure,” said Selena Lueckfeld, manager at Family Dollar, 229 E. Green Bay St.
Lueckfeld said the last word she had on when the relocation would happen was February, but she could not say whether that was still the plan.
Family Dollar’s district manager was not available Thursday.
Lueckfeld said the new store would be larger than the current location and allow for more products to be offered, including expanded food and health and beauty categories.
The site plan calls for a 9,180 square-foot Family Dollar, about half the size of the old Country Store. It will be located closer to Main Street and provide parking on all four sides.
Because no variances are being requested, the site plan won’t have to go before the Plan Commission or Common Council for approval. However, it has been reviewed not only by Miller, but also by the Department of Public Works to make sure everything is up to code, and all curb and gutter and other requirements are met.
The Police Department also reviewed the plan to ensure there is enough room for emergency vehicles to maneuver.
Miller said there was some infrastructure work that will have to done on Washington Street to accommodate the new development, but that work will be the developer’s responsibility.
The Country Store has been vacant since 2010 when it relocated about a block away, at 521 S. Main St., under the name Charlie’s County Market.
