Shawano school district aims to control taxes

Shawano school officials have trimmed staff and reined in health care costs to formulate a $26 million budget proposal that minimizes property tax increases for the 2015-16 school year. 2 lake deaths ruled accidental
Two deaths on lakes in Shawano County this summer have been ruled accidental drownings. The Shawano County coroner’s office has released findings in the deaths of both Norman Robertson on Shawano Lake and Maynard Sohr on Lily Lake. Robertson, 45, a vacationer from Maryland, was found dead July 30 after he jumped into the lake to help his 10-year-old son and the two of them got separated from their boat.

Change in sex offender residency rules won’t affect state facility
City officials last week made a minor adjustment intending to clarify rules covering where convicted sex offenders can live in Shawano, but the change won’t impact the state’s plans to open a temporary placement facility for recently released felons in a residential neighborhood. The state Department of Corrections is in the final stages of formalizing an agreement with Milwaukee-based Matt Talbot Recovery Services to operate the six-bed facility

New pastor getting to know Zion congregation, community
The Rev. Scott Ludford has spent the last month settling in as pastor of Zion Lutheran Church in Shawano. “I was getting to the point in my career to do one last call,” Ludford said. “It just felt right. Zion’s needs and where they were at matched up with my experience.” He replaced the Rev. Gisele Berninghaus, who served as interim pastor, last month. Ludford was previously at First Lutheran Church of Hayward for eight and a half years.
