Lena boys top Gresham in nonconference action

Dash Comins and P.J. Finger each scored 13 points to lead Lena past Gresham 48-41 in boys basketball action.

Lucas Monigat scored seven points for Lena.

Lena carried a 23-21 lead into halftime and pulled away with a 25-20 second half, at one point leading by as much as 10 points.

Granquist collects 1,000 career rebounds

Wittenberg-Birnamwood 89, Weyauwega-Fremont 32

Wittenberg-Birnamwood senior Melaina Granquist pulled down eight rebounds, including the 1,000th of her career, as the Chargers crushed Weyauwega-Fremont 89-32 in a CWC-East game.

Granquist led her team in rebounds as well as points with 28. She also had one block and two steals.

Red Robins, Storm earns wins on the ice

Antigo 4, Rhinelander 1

The Red Robins are 5-4 in the Great Northern Conference and 12-6 overall following a 4-1 win over Rhinelander.

A scoreless first period gave way at 9:54 in the second period when Antigo’s Billy Portman scored with Richie Veriha assisting. The Hodags tied the game just two minutes later.

Listening session offers ideas to cut school district budget

Staff with the Shawano School District dominated much of the time Jan. 26 as the district held one of two listening sessions intended to give them direction on what should be eliminated, altered or trimmed to help cut $1.6 million from its operational budget for the next school year.

Karen Marie Boettcher

Karen Marie Boettcher (Sutrick), 64, passed away Jan. 21, 2026, surrounded by loved ones, at Meadowbrook in Oconto Falls.

She was born March 6, 1961, in Oconto Falls where she spent her early life and attended Oconto Falls High School. She later moved to the Marinette and Peshtigo area where she resided for many years.

Kazik picked to lead county treasurer office

Emily Kazik, a payroll technician in the Shawano County administration department, has been chosen as the new county treasurer.

Kazik will complete the unexpired term of Deb Wallace, who resigned in December. The four-year term will expire in January 2029.

Kazik’s hiring was approved by the executive committee Jan. 21. The county board was expected to approve her new status Jan. 28.

Girl Scout cookie season underway

Girl Scouts are kicking off their cookie season by welcoming Exploremores to the cookie lineup.

Girl Scouts throughout central and northern Wisconsin and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula are ready to embark on the 2026 Girl Scout Cookie Program.

Patti Shafto-Carlson, CEO of Girl Scouts of the Northwestern Great Lakes, said all net proceeds stay local, helping fund camps, service projects, travel and leadership experiences.

Income tax help available starting Feb. 4

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance is an IRS program designed to provide free basic tax assistance to low- to moderate-income families, generally less than $65,000. Returns can be prepared for those who qualify for Earned Income Tax Credit and Homestead Credit.

Volunteers who have completed IRS requirements will be preparing and e-filing the returns.

St. Clare raffling baskets at luncheon

The Partners of HSHS St. Clare Memorial Hospital is inviting the community to a luncheon and love basket raffle Feb. 13, an event that raises money to support programs at the hospital.
