Onna Hermann took first place at 120 pounds and several other Shawano wrestlers finished in the top five at the NEC/Bay Conference conference tournament on Feb. 3. All told, Shawano sacred 93 points while giving up 86, which placed them in first at the event in Waupaca. “The girls had a good day of wrestling, earning enough team points to take first,” coach Mike Homan said.

UW-Oshkosh University of Wisconsin Oshkosh officials have released the names of students who qualified for the dean’s list and honor roll in fall 2023 across its three campuses (Fond du Lac, Fox Cities and Oshkosh). The term GPA requirement for university honor roll is 3.3; the term GPA requirement for dean’s list is 3.75 out of a possible 4.0. To qualify, a student must have been enrolled in a minimum of 12 credits.

You’ve already paid for them. They’re yours, but if you want to see the public records that show what your government is doing, some state lawmakers want you to pay again — this time, for redactions. That’s right. They want you to pay more to get less. Currently, the state’s Open Records Law allows public officials to charge only for the “actual, necessary, and direct cost” of copying, mailing and in some cases locating public records.

I felt like a bit of fantasy this week so I selected “Dragon Force” by Lucia Ashta. Once I got past Ashta’s rather strange names of places and things, it was a pretty good read. After only a few chapters I noticed that the story has strong religious undertones, giving it an almost parable-like feel. The adventure is set on Planet Origins. It has two suns, the Auxle and Suxle, and a purple moon known as the Plune.

Roger William Beaber Jr., of Mountain, passed away on Feb. 1, 2024, after a 2½-year courageous battle with skin cancer. He was under the care of his family and Unity Hospice. Roger was born Sept. 17, 1949, in Marinette, to the late Roger Sr. and Hildegaard (Odorfer) Beaber. He was united in marriage to Linda (Sells) on July 15, 1972, in New London. Roger was a graduate of Gillett High School in Gillett.

Oconto County is apparently close to announcing its next county administrator, as Erik Pritzl marks his last day in office. The county executive committee voted Feb. 1 to send an amended contract agreement to its recommended candidate, according to draft minutes posted online. The candidate has not yet been named publicly. Pritzl’s last scheduled day as the second Oconto County administrator was Feb. 7. He begins his job Feb.

The Oconto Police Department gave an emotional farewell to Chief Mike Rehberg on Jan. 31, his last day before retiring. In a video posted on social media, Rehberg is seen reporting in for “my last 10-42,” police code for end of shift.

The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction announced the online application period for the Public School Open Enrollment Program for the 2024-25 school year is open. Running through April 30, parents and guardians can apply to send their children to any public school district in Wisconsin during the 2024-25 school year through the open enrollment program.
