Proceedings of March 15 • Justin John Ault, 34, Sobieski, was sentenced to two years in prison, followed by two years of extended supervision, for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated (fifth or sixth offense) and a misdemeanor count of operating while his license was revoked, in connection with an incident that occurred Nov. 5, 2023.

• Michael L. Szafranek, 43, Crivitz, pleaded no contest March 11 to felony bail jumping and issuing worthless checks, along with a misdemeanor bad checks charge. Judge Katherine Sloma withheld sentencing and placed him on three years of probation with conditions including 120 days in county jail. • John G.

Shawano County Sheriff’s Department March 17 Deputies responded to 30 incidents, including operating while intoxicated on Lake Drive in the Town of Wescott; three lost property complaints and a trespassing complaint at Big Time Sports, W6014 Lake Drive in the Town of Wescott; operating without a license at Kwik Trip, 1241 E.

As the woods and farm fields start to green up and north-migrating waterfowl send their honks and whistles down to my little corner of Wisconsin paradise, I began dreaming of puffed-up gobblers coming to my sweet box call and seductive mouth call. And then reality hits, and I realize all my turkey gear is scattered to the far corners of my garages and basement.

A Shawano County deputy stopped a driver clocked at 123 miles per hour in a 65 mph the evening of March 10. According to officials, Deputy Jacob Ostrowski stopped the vehicle on state Highway 29 in the western part of the county and deemed the situation “absolutely unacceptable.” Ostrowski said there were two vehicles going this speed and he was only able to get one stopped.

Universities are researching a variety of things as students work to advance their knowledge of the universe, and Maya Desai from Bowler is one of them. Desai recently presented her research to lawmakers and other influential people in Madison as part of the Research in the Rotunda program.

Every year, Shawano County forecloses on a handful of properties after their owners haven’t paid taxes and other fees for the previous three years. This year, two properties are in the mix, one in Tigerton and one in Mattoon. It appears as if the Mattoon property has been abandoned, but the Tigerton home is at the center of a debate between the person formerly listed as the owner and another who claims to have a land contract to buy the property.

The deadline of April 6 is approaching for the 18th annual George Putz Memorial Student Writing Contest, sponsored by the Shawano Area Writers. There is no entry fee for student writers in grades 1-12 to submit as many entries as they would like in either fiction, nonfiction, poetry, or all three categories.
