Wisconsin farms that conduct their own pest management control practices need to be certified through the Pesticide Applicator Training (PAT) process to purchase or apply restricted-use-pesticides. The process for ordering the PAT manual and registering for a training/test session has undergone significant changes.

The Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) is asking for folks to help show veterans how much they appreciate their service and sacrifice by sending Valentine’s Day cards to veterans living in DVA facilities. “Last year, the residents at our Veteran Homes in Chippewa Falls, King and Union Grove were thrilled to receive Valentine’s Day wishes and thoughtful messages,” said DVA Secretary James Bond.

On the heels of a $40 annual wheel tax for Shawano residents, most Shawano County residents could soon find themselves facing a similar fee. Members of the Shawano County Highway and Parks Committee on Jan. 7 unanimously agreed to a $25 annual wheel tax on all vehicles weighing no more than 8,000 pounds. The vehicle registration fee was scheduled to be debated by the executive committee Jan. 15 and could go to the full county board Jan. 22.

A beloved wife, mother and grandmother, Muriel “Midge” J. Acra (nee Swanson) passed away Saturday, Jan. 4, 2025. She entered into her eternal life surrounded by her loving daughters. She was born in Chicago, on March 26, 1935, to her parents, Murrell and Beatrice Swanson. Especially close with her father, it was Murrell who fostered Midge’s love of school and learning, enrolling her at the Academy of Our Lady in Chicago.

A generator failure at the Balsam Row Road Dam will cause unstable water levels north of the dam for the rest of the winter, according to the Shawano County Sheriff’s Department. “It should only impact the waterway north of the Balsam Row Road Dam, which is about 1.7 miles in our county,” said Lt. Chris Madle, also the county’s emergency management director. “They’re not worried about flooding or anything right now.
