Hawks, Chargers advance to within a game of state tournament

Ice Bears to compete for state title
March 6 Bay Area 4, Cap City Cougars 0 The Bay Area Ice Bears return to the girls hockey state championship game with a 4-0 shutout of the Cap City Cougars. And, they will face off against Central Wisconsin Storm, the team that beat them last year for the state title. The Ice Bears first got on the board at 5:22 in the first period with a goal from Aisling Buchan with assists from Lily Lyons and Elizabeth Zunker.

Besaw selected as representative for DATCP board
Gov. Tony Evers has announced the appointment of Gary Besaw to the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) Board. Besaw will serve as a consumer representative in a term expiring May 1, 2029. Besaw, of Keshena, currently serves as the director of the Menominee Tribal Department of Agriculture and Food Systems and the Menominee Tribal Food Distribution Program.

Credit union collecting food for area pantries
NEW Credit Union seeks to help others during March by participating in the fifth annual Penny Nicholas Food Drive. Leland (Penny) Nicholas was a firm believer in the credit union philosophy of people helping people, and this food drive was instituted as a tribute to him. Nicholas served on the board of directors of NEW Credit Union for 34 years.

Record attendance reported at county fair
Scott Breitrick of the Shawano County Agricultural Society told Shawano County supervisors the 2024 county fair saw record attendance. “The fair attendance was excellent. We had 70,751 people attend the fair,” he said at the Feb. 26 meeting of the county board. “I think that’s probably the most that we’ve ever had at the fair in one year.” Breitrick spoke briefly about the ag society’s annual report. “The midway stage we put up in the middle.

Bartz recognized at retirement
Sarah Bartz, who retired Jan. 10 as manager of the human services income maintenance and child support division, was recognized for her 25 years of service at the Shawano County Board of Supervisor’s Feb. 26 meeting. “She’s been with me since the beginning. We were both younger and had darker hair at the time,” said Richard Kane, human services department director. “Sarah’s done a great job.
