On Saturday, March 8, 2025, Ann Agnes (Ploeger) Cayo peacefully went home to Jesus, with family at her side. Ann was born Aug. 3, 1936, in Elderon to Gilbert and Cecelia (Verkuilen) Ploeger, at home on the family’s farm. She graduated from Wittenberg High School in 1954. After graduation, the young lady went to experience city life in Milwaukee. Finding it not her cup of tea, she ended up settling in the Valley.

New clay at the Shawano Speedway and repairs to a couple of buildings at the Shawano County Fairgrounds were approved by the county’s Ag and Extension Committee on March 13. The Shawano Area Agricultural Society Inc., which operates the fairgrounds, will pay the county highway department $30,750 for new clay for the racetrack. Scott Breitrick, president of the Ag Society, said each load of clay costs them $197, and he is hoping to organize a fund

The Shawano School Board approved a new five-year contract for LEADS Primary Charter School on March 10 after two years of offering one-year extensions on the previous contract. The new contract comes as the school is seeing increased interest in parents wanting to enroll in the special school housed within Hillcrest Primary School.

The Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) announced its all-conference teams and major award winners for the 2024-25 women’s basketball season. Concordia University Wisconsin landed one All-NACC first team selection with Aubrey DeBauch. A senior forward from Gillett, DeBauch is claiming her second consecutive selection to the All-NACC first team. DeBauch was a scoring machine for the Falcons in the 2024-25 campaign.

Peter Thomas Kaufman, 94, of Antigo, passed away peacefully at home March 11, 2025, with his devoted wife of 43 years, Carli, by his side. He was born March 1, 1931, at home in Mattoon. Born the eighth of nine children to Nellie (Ringstad) and Edward Kaufman, he was the last survivor of this large and loving family. Peter loved to bowl and be at the ball field.

Shawano Area Writers has announced that Doug Erdman will serve as master of ceremonies and Kim Suhr will deliver the keynote address for the 2025 Putz Memorial Student Writing Contest. Erdman has been with Results Broadcasting in Shawano for 36 years and became a legend when he referred to himself as one in his own mind. Now, through the efforts of many people, Erdman is considered a legend by the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association.

There’s a new plan in the works for the former White Pines Lodge on Big Lake Road in the Town of Red Springs.
