Contract manufacturer J&R Machine Inc., of Shawano, has been named an honors program winner in Modern Machine Shop magazine’s 2014 Top Shops survey. Modern Machine Shop, published by Gardner Business Media, of Ohio, provides the annual survey to enable its readers to compare their operations’ performance and practices against industry leaders.

September is Library Card Sign-up Month, a time when the Shawano City-County Library joins with the American Library Association and public libraries nationwide to make sure every student has a free library card. Library cards are free and available at any age, beginning at birth. Resources at the Shawano City-County Library are available to anyone who has a library card.

The Shawano Police Department is still looking for residents interested in being part of the citizen police academy that starts Monday night. The five-week program, meeting from 6-9 p.m. Mondays, will introduce the public to all aspects of the department and how it functions. “If we get more people who understand what we can do, what we can’t do, what they can do and can’t do, there’s a tendency to reduce crime,” Chief Mark Kohl said.

Thomas R. Schmidt, 82, of Cecil, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2014, at his daughter’s home in Appleton. He was born on Feb. 1, 1932, in Appleton, son of the late Joseph A. and Pearl M. (Miller) Schmidt. After graduating from high school, Tom proudly served his country with the U.S. Army during the Korean War. After his time in the service he came home to meet, and marry, the love of his life, Mary Ann C. Rutten, on Sept.

Elaine E. Gagnow, 83, of Seymour, passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2014, at Manor Care in Shawano. She was born July 29, 1931, daughter of the late Oscar and Meta (Madison) Gagnow. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cicero.

Bonduel Elementary School Bonduel Elementary received a grant of nearly $5,000 from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Institute for Learning Partnership to be used to purchase the LEGO robotics program. The program was ordered, and a group of teachers was trained on Aug. 21. The program requires the kids to read and follow step-by-step instructions on how to build different items, just like a set of regular LEGOS.
