State Rep. Calvin Callahan will hold in-district office hours at four locations around the district June 23-24. Constituents can sign up for 10-minute meetings with him to discuss any state-related concerns, talk about issues with a state agency or if they just want to meet Callahan and his staff. Office hours on June 23 will be from 10 a.m. to noon at the Elcho School District, N11268 Antigo St., Elcho, and from 4:15-5:45 p.m.

A 48-year-old man from Pound was shot in the leg during a disturbance at a Town of Brazeau home June 18, according to the Oconto County Sheriff’s Office. In a news release, the sheriff’s office said that about 12:50 a.m., the dispatch center was notified of an incident involving a firearm in the area of the 11000 block of Tom Post Road. A preliminary investigation revealed a disturbance had occurred among several people at the residence.

As the second installment in its new speaker series, Lakes Country Public Library welcomes Douglas Buege for a July 16 presentation. Buege will discuss northern Oconto County’s butterflies and habitats at 6 p.m. in the Zeller Community Room. Douglas, who has a doctorate in philosophy, has been teaching in Madison since 1998.

The Lena Public Library will play host to Stella, a Linnaeus’s two-toed sloth, as part of the library’s summer reading program, “Color Our World,” at 1 p.m. July 24 at Lena High School, 304 E. Main St. This 90-minute program will offer attendees an opportunity to meet Stella up close and learn about these creatures.

The Holt & Balcom Logging Camp Museum in Lakewood is open for public tours from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. every Saturday through Labor Day weekend. A special Reader’s Theatre Performance with a logging theme will be presented at 2 p.m. Aug. 17 by the Wabeno Area Players. Holt & Balcom Logging Camp Museum is located off Highway F, 1.5 miles east of Lakewood. Turn right into the McCauslin Golf Course and Country Club, then follow the signs.

Glen Martin, a member of the Sons of American Legion, won the fifth annual American Legion Post 44 — Wabeno RibFest Challenge, held June 7. Martin outcooked five other contestants. He and his wife, Amanda, participate in many Legion activities.

Farms are increasingly utilizing cover crops as a method of managing soil erosion and improving overall soil health. Cover crops are known to have benefits, but they can also have drawbacks in some situations. The Antigo Silt Loam & Water Producer-led Watershed Protection Group is sponsoring a Community Field Day on June 27 starting at 10:30 a.m.

Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School cross country coach Cathy Esker was inducted into the U.S. College Track & Field/Cross Country Hall of Fame on June 8. Esker, then known as Cathy Branta, competed at UW-Madison in the 1980s. She is a five-time national champion and 11-time All-American.
