Irene Selle, 94, of Tigerton, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2013, surrounded by family at Homme Home of Wittenberg.
The former Irene Rohlinger was born on Feb. 20, 1919, in Edgar to the late Peter and Agnes (Grieten) Rohlinger. On Nov. 2, 1937, she was united in marriage to Walter R. Selle, and they dairy farmed on the Selle homestead in the town of Fairbanks.
During their marriage she worked at the Hanson Glove Factory in Clintonville for 15 years. She was the last surviving member of the 1936 graduating class from Tigerton High School. Irene enjoyed attending the 2009 High School Centennial. Irene was a long-time member of St. John Lutheran Church, was active in the LWML and served as treasurer, attended Bible class and participated in quilt making. She was an avid reader, enjoyed crossword puzzles, playing cards and bowling. Her greatest joy was her family, especially the annual family reunion.
Survivors include her six children, Carol (Bill) Ready, of Blue Springs, Mo., Roger (Caroline), of Tigerton, Dale (Nancy), of Tigerton, Sharon (Dennis) Schultz, of Des Moines, Iowa, Shirley (Larry) Benbrooks, of Greenville, and Walt Jr. (Mary), of Tigerton. There are 19 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, and 18 great-great grandchildren. There are two sisters, Lou Sampson, of Green Bay, and Lila (Ken) Oliver, of Tucson, Ariz. She is further survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Irene was preceded in death by her husband, Walter, on March 22, 1988, four brothers, two sisters and numerous brothers- and sisters-in-law.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Sept. 7, at 11 a.m. at St. John Lutheran Church, Tigerton. The Rev. Matthew Uttenreither will officiate, and burial will follow at Union Cemetery, Tigerton. Friends may call on Saturday from 9 a.m. until time of service at the church.
