It was a day of ties at the Bay Conference girls golf match Thursday at Shawano Lake Golf Course.
Shawano finished tied with West De Pere at 208 for fifth place Thursday. Denmark and Marinette tied at 191 for first place and Seymour and Oconto Falls each came in at 220 to tie for seventh place.
“We’ve been fifth. That’s about what we’ve been lately,” Shawano coach Dean Kugler said. “But actually, our scores were much lower today, which at this course it’s to be expected.”
Luxemburg-Casco’s Catarina Wurflova was the medalist with a 39.
The Hawks were led by Courtney Baumann, who shot a 47 and placed sixth.
Megan Beck and Julia Beck each finished with 51. Emily Smith shot a 59 and Cheyenne Knueppel had a 64.
“I think Courtney was probably disappointed,” Kugler said. “She didn’t do as well as she wanted, but the other girls, 51s.”
Kugler said the recent storms that left some damage at Shawano Lake Golf Course caused a few issues.
“I think with the trees down, we had a lot of issues,” Kugler said.
It was the first time this season the Hawks played a competitive round at the course.
“You should play better at home, you should,” Kugler said. “But we haven’t, other than the last two days, we haven’t practiced here. We’ve been playing every day. You don’t really get to play your home course. It’s kind of unique in that way.”
The coach saw improvement in his team.
“The girls are getting better. And that is all you can ask,” he said. “We’re doing just fine. Courtney has an opportunity to be in the top 10. The top five would probably be her goal, which will be tough. Megan has been consistently in the low 50s. I think she’d like to be lower. I think she’s starting to find her swing, which means she’s going to come down. Julia and Cheyenne and Emily and those guys are going to keep getting better.”
