Shawano quarterback Cole Huntington found Brice Bergner for a 43-yard go-ahead touchdown on fourth and long in the final minute of Friday’s Bay Conference game in New London.
Running back Will Cox put in the 2-point conversion and Shawano held on for the 32-26 victory over New London (0-3, 0-1 Bay).
“It was an awesome football game,” first-year Shawano coach Al Tomow said. “The flow of the game was back and fourth. Both teams took each other’s best shots and got up and kept coming. We had the lead when time ran out.”
The win was Tomow’s first as head coach and the first of the season for Shawano (1-2, 1-0 Bay).
“It’s always about the kids and the job that they do, and trusting the coaches,” Tomow said. “Watching that play out and watching them get back up after (New London) scored and lean on each other, that was the greatest feeling.”
Cox had 26 carries for 161 yards and a touchdown in his first action of the season.
Huntington and Bergner connected twice for touchdowns, including the game-winner. Huntington also rushed for a touchdown.
