Sometimes when I look out my window, I think it’s snowing. Then I realize that it is only leaves coming down from the trees.
Once in a while it is one lonely leaf spiraling its way down to fall quietly onto the earth. It is hard to deny that autumn is settling in all around us.
The past couple of weeks, I have noticed splashes of color here and there in the trees. That was especially true on the trip I took north to Ironwood, Mich., and Bayfield, Wis., but there is evidence here, too.
One thing I observed through the summer is that there is an overabundance of leaves this year, and extra underbrush has popped up along the roadsides.
I imagine it had something to do with the excess of rain earlier in the year.
Now that harvest is drawing near for local farmers, rain is in short supply. I pray that the corn and soybean crops are able to withstand this. Somehow, farmers always find a way to muddle through, but my heart goes out to them with the hard work not always resulting in the best results.
Most people with gardens are hoping the frost will hold off for a few more weeks.
Tomatoes are ripening, cucumbers producing, plus pumpkins, squash and melons are maturing. I had two potted tomato plants that have finished their production, and two potted green pepper plants that have overproduced to the point that I had to give some away.
Now and then, I hear geese calling their way south.
That never fails to have me raise my head and watch in wonder at the power of our maker, that the geese know their way. Of course, there are some who choose to winter over in the environment where they spent their summer.
Of course, on a more quiet front, the hummingbirds and the butterflies also travel south. After I spent weeks trying to get a picture of a butterfly, the other day one came and sat on the marigold plant on my back deck, and stayed for at least 10 minutes.
Oh well, guess I could have gone and gotten its picture; however, I had company, and we were playing a contentious card game of rummy.
While the signs of autumn cannot be disputed, my life continues at its summer fast pace.
The Shawano County Fair is nothing but a memory now, but there are new places to go, and different things to do.
I am planning on three relaxing days in the Northwoods, at Camp Luther, which is near Three Lakes.
I haven’t gone to the annual LWML district retreat in a couple of years, and now question the wisdom of doing it this year. This will be the fourth weekend in a row that I am going to be gone more than home.
Guess I am trying to get all the traveling in prior to the snow.
