Menominee Indian High School
The Menominee Indian High School had its first parent/teacher conferences of the year on Thursday. Many parents came in to see how their student is doing. The PBIS team had an incentive for those parents who attended. For each teacher the parents visited, they received a ticket to put into a drawing at the end of the night for an iPad. The lucky winner was Terri Wynos. Congratulations, Terri.
Thirty-minute sessions were also available for parents to learn about different resources for them to help their student be successful. The sessions included Menominee Model, during which staff explained to the parents how we prepare students to be college and career ready, and Senior Conferencing, discussing how we prepare upperclassmen for the future.
PBIS explained how parents and students earn rewards for promoting positive behavior in school. Edline shared how the school’s website is used for teacher websites and information for the students. Skyward Data System showed parents how they can keep track of their student’s attendance and grades from home. These sessions were very informational for the parents.
On Oct. 25, the freshman class will be sponsoring a Halloween dance from 7-9:30 p.m.
Shawano Community High School
The SCHS Culture Club will be having its famous Indian Taco Sale from 10:30 a.m. to noon — or until gone — Friday in the SCHS Commons. We appreciate your support!
SCHS presents its fall play, “Romeo and Juliet,” at 7 p.m. Thursday through Saturday at the SCHS auditorium. Tickets are $3 for students, $5 for adults. Thursday is “pay what you can” night.
A community open house featuring the SCHS tech ed facilities will be held from 4-7 p.m.Tuesday.
Olga Brener Intermediate School
In the age of emails and text messaging, Mrs. Preston’s fifth-grade class is celebrating letter writing. They have pen pals at Lafayette Elementary School in Seattle, Wash. Students have just exchanged introductory letters and will write once a month to each other. Our students will share all of the wonderful things about Wisconsin and learn about Washington state from their pen pals.
Our students have been busy MAPS testing. The students will be testing from Oct. 2-29 on MAPS (Measures of Academic Progress) in math, reading and language arts.

Bonduel Elementary
The Bonduel Elementary teachers would like to send out a huge thank you to the Shawano Walmart for its teacher donations. The Shawano Walmart visited the Bonduel Elementary School and spoke about the Walmart Teacher Rewards campaign. Representatives explained how they appreciate everything the teachers in our community do for the students.
The Walmart representatives, Nancy and Marty, handed out 12 $50 gift cards for the teachers at the elementary to spend on teaching supplies for their classrooms. The Walmart representatives also donated a box of school supplies for our students. Thank you, Walmart, for your generous gifts. The money and school supplies will be put to good use to help our students at Bonduel Elementary School.
Bowler Elementary
Bowler Elementary students recently sported their favorite hats during an assembly for Heavenly Hats, an organization that helps raise cancer awareness. Students who brought in at least $1 were able to wear their hats for the entire school day. Principal Wade Turner showcased a rather large sombrero. The event raised nearly $170 for cancer research.
St. James Lutheran
Dates that are coming up: Grandparents Day, Oct. 23; St. James dinner gala, Nov. 1; St. James PTL craft fair, Nov. 2 Hope you can join us for some of these events. Should be a lot of fun.
First-graders are working on reading to self. They practice reading silently to themselves for as long as they can before getting distracted. We also took a visit to the library and squeezed around a good book on the couch.
Shawano Community Middle School
We are excited to write another positive article about how wonderful things are going here at SCMS. Students between the ages of 10 and 15 undergo many changes, emotionally, socially and physically. We see the same types of changes at school as you see at home. We look forward to working together with you and your student(s) to make their educational experience rewarding. Please continue to communicate with the teachers and administration about all of the positive things you are seeing at school.
You are finding that our middle school has amazing and caring teachers who are working very hard to help your students reach their potential. You are finding that when we know about a bullying or harassment situation, we immediately address it. You are finding that your student really likes our school. You are finding that we have highly qualified and professional staff members working with your student(s).
Overall, you are realizing that middle school-aged students are in the process of physical, mental and social growth, and they may or may not remember to come home and share information with you. Sometimes, they may only remember part of the entire section of information. And also remember that there are always two sides to any story.
The school has several ways of communicating with you: Our website (www.shawanoschools.com), the weekly BUZZ that is sent home, and School Messenger phone calls when necessary. Students and staff are utilizing the student agendas on a daily basis as well, so be checking your student’s agenda for personal information and assignments from teachers. Please make sure that you are accessing this information to keep informed of all of the events that are happening here at our school. And please remember to call or stop in with any questions or concerns, as hearing the information from the source is the right way to go.
