Garret Schlise had two goals, Zachary Dickmann had two assists and the Shawano Community High School boys soccer team upset Wausau East 3-0 Tuesday in the WIAA Division 2 tournament in Wausau.
Schlise began the scoring for the fith-seeded Hawks (15-4-1) with a goal, off a Dickmann assist, 30 minutes into the match. Nathaniel Wilson added a goal 5 minutes later, with Schilse giving an assist, that put Shawano up 2-0 against No. 4-seeded Wausau East (10-7-4).
“There were opportunities both ways,” Shawano coach Bob Croschere said. “We kind of took advantage of ours first and rolled from there.”
The score remained 2-0 late into the second half, until Schlise put in a goal at the 75 minute mark, again off an assist from Dickmann.
“We played well as a team tonight,” Croschere said. “We passed the ball well. We had a lot of good opportunities.”
Michael Meisner got the shutout and had five saves tending the Shawano goal.
The weather was less than ideal, but Shawano played through it.
“It was cold, cold and rainy,” Croschere said. “It kind of slowed down everything.”
In Thursday’s regional final, Shawano will face the No. 1 seed, Marshfield (15-4-2), which defeated Antigo 12-0 Tuesday, at Griese Park in Marshfield.
“We’ll go into it as just another game,” Croschere said. “We step onto the field and try to win every one that we play. I don’t think it’ll be an issue for us if it’s a No. 1 seed or not.”
