A groundbreaking celebration was held Oct. 19 for the new Habitat for Humanity house on Bent Arrow Road in Keshena.
Volunteers of the local affiliate serving Shawano and Menominee counties joined the Rebecca Smith family to celebrate the start of their home.
Smith and her four children will put in 500 hours of “sweat equity” in constructing their home along with local volunteers.
Once completed, the home will be then sold to the Smith family at cost with no interest.
Wolf River Habitat for Humanity, a local Christian housing ministry, has partnered with local families to give them a hand up rather than a hand out. Habitat has completed 11 homes in the area since 1998.
Volunteers must be 18 or older (16 if accompanied by an adult) and must sign a liability waiver to be on the work site. A construction supervisor assigns tasks according to the volunteer’s abilities and interests. A little time or a lot, a day now and then or every work day, all volunteers are welcome. Even if you cannot help with construction, there are other ways to help.
