Bobbi Hacker, of the town of Wescott, is a member of the Shawano AmVets Post 10 and volunteers for several roles.
Born and raised in Shawano, she enlisted in the Army after graduating from Shawano High School. She served for six and a half years, even after shattering her arm in a noncombat accident. She had been to Korea, Colorado and South Carolina.
After her Army career, she returned to Shawano where she has had various jobs, but mostly works as a licensed bartender.
Hacker has five children and one grandchild. The family enjoys game night with a board game that makes them think a little bit, she said.
Q How are you a member of the AmVets?
A “I did six and a half years active duty in the Army. You have to have an honorable discharge to be a member. I am in the AmVets Post 10, the VFW Post 2723 and the DAV Post 22.”
Q What do you do?
A “If they have funerals, I do the honor guard and parades. I tend bar at the VFW and the AmVets. I used to manage the VFW bar, and they asked me to come back. I’ve been bartending since I’ve been out. I’m everywhere. They know where to find me. I also help with the brat fries, the White Clover sales, meat raffles, turkey shoot and bowling tournaments.”
Q The AmVets take care of the bar at the Shawano Lake County Park Pavilion. How often to you help there?
A “It all varies. It could be once a week. It’s all pre-booked. It’s a full bar, but not run like a regular bar. There are weddings, benefits, wine and cheese, anniversaries. We keep the cash from the bar. After expenses, it goes back to the post. We have a meeting each month. We are pretty generous about our donations.”
