Sixty-eight crafters and artists displayed and sold their work to a large crowd of people at the Mielke Arts Center on Sunday for the 46th annual Shawano County Arts and Crafts Fair.
Steve Champine, of Howard, won the Best of Show award in the art category. Sisters Marilyn Ness, of White Lake, and Kathy Yaeger, of Appleton, shared Best of Show honors in the crafts category.
The weather kept away a few vendors, but Shawano County Arts and Crafts Fair chairperson Cheryl Folkerts said that is to be expected.
“That’s kind of normal,” Folkerts said.
New vendors along with those who attend every year displayed the usual to the unusual, such as the birdfeeders made by Yaeger and Ness. They make them out of teapots, plates and trays, with an appropriate name, “We’re for the Birds.”
Sue Ross comes to the fair from southern Wisconsin every year.
“We plan our vacation around the art fair,” she said. “I do my Christmas shopping.”
Several ladies from the Bonduel area were shopping together.
“Usually it’s raining, but no matter what, we come,” Kris Robaidek said.
New this year among the food concessions was cheesecake made by Denise Riley.
“We only had one cheesecake out of nine left,” Folkerts said. “They loved it.”
In addition to Best of Show, awards also were presented for first, second and third in each of the two categories.
In the art category, Gary Gurnee, of Shawano, placed first with his acrylic paintings; Alex Majeski, Green Valley, second, pottery; Virginia Maloney, Schofield, third, acrylics.
In the crafts category, Deb Rades, of Shawano, placed first with her beading; Larry Jepson, Greenleaf, second, brass wire trees; Dan Spielvogel, Shawano, third, birdhouses.
