The Bishop Fox Council Knights of Columbus 2836 from Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shawano serve in many areas.
“We help the community, not only the church,” said Lee Bosdeck, trustee and former grand knight.
Recently the council purchased an automatic external defibrillator for the school and church cafeteria. Its use will be demonstrated at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 16 in the cafeteria.
There is already an AED between the church and school on the main floor.
“We felt there should be another one in the cafeteria,” Bosdeck said.
To finance their projects, the knights have an annual porkie pancake breakfast. The next one is from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 5 in the cafeteria. The breakfast is also held the first weekend in March. Confirmation candidates help out at the meal.
To help the disabled, the club has a Tootsie Roll sale the last weekend in April and the first weekend in May. This year they presented a check for $2727.65 to Gene Stuber, production supervisor at Lakeland Industries, from the sale. The clients from Lakeland helped with the sale.
“They enjoyed it so much the first weekend, they asked if they could do it two weekends,” Bosdeck said.
The knights were at Qualheim’s, Kwik Trip, and Charlie’s County Market. The Lakeland clients were at Walmart. Sales were also available after all Masses those weekends.
Bosdeck said people recognize the bright vests the knights and clients wear.
“They are digging in their money walking up to you,” he said.
Stuber said the money will be used to purchase equipment for Lakeland’s production area. Dale Vannes and Jake Pozorski, who were co-chairmen, thanked the community for their generosity and support.
The knights also have a raffle that begins in January and ends in April.
Those funds are sent to the state office and then disbursed from there to needy causes such as people who lose their jobs, need vehicles repaired or are sick. Most of the recipients are found through word of mouth.
This year at the parish picnic, the knights roasted a pig that was donated by a parish member; another parish member paid for the processing. The knights tended it from 3 p.m. Saturday to 3 a.m. Sunday. They sold out in an hour at the picnic, so next year they will roast two pigs.
Club officers are Charles Ketchum, grand knight; Troy Sadler, financial secretary; John Whitehouse, treasurer; the Rev. Luke Ferris, chaplain; Bob Koch, chancellor; Gary Pawlak, warden; Paul Kriescher and Mike Reuter, guards; and Bosdeck, Bill Hoppe and Richard Raflik, trustees.
They meet at 7 p.m. the third Tuesday of the month in the DeGroot Room.
