Martin J. Hess Sr.

Martin “Mike” J. Hess Sr., 77, of Shawano, formerly of Des Plaines, Illinois, passed away on Sept. 21, 2014, in Shawano. Born on Jan. 24, 1937, in Des Plaines, he was the son of the late Joseph and Johanna (Drenth) Hess. In 1957, Mike enlisted in the United States Army and served during the Korean War until he was honorably discharged in 1959. On Aug. 15 of the same year, Mike was united in marriage to Arlene H. White in Elmhurst, Illinois. Together the couple had three children. Mike owned and operated a trucking company in Illinois for over 20 years. He also worked for his father in the restaurant business for over 20 years. Mike loved playing the accordion and often played for the residents of the local nursing homes. He also loved fishing and was a member of the N.E.W.C.A.B.B., as well as the Sportsman Club. Mike is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Arlene; his children, Martin “Butch” (Marge) Hess Jr., Joann (Dan) Berg and Darlene (Dan) Makula; his grandchildren, Daniel Berg Jr., Joseph Berg, Alexa Hess, Michelle Makula and Daniel Makula Jr. He is further survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Mike was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Joseph R. Hess. Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25, 2014, at the Swedberg Funeral Home with the Rev. Ted Andrada officiating. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 4 p.m. until the time of the service on Thursday. Burial will be in the Town of Maine Cemetery. www.swedbergfuneralhome.com
