The young Shawano Community High School girls golf team regressed, but junior Julia Beck earned a trip to sectionals at Wednesday’s WIAA Division 1 regional tournament at Thornberry Creek at Oneida.
Beck shot a 97, finishing tied with Green Bay Preble’s Sydney Onesti for ninth. Beck had the lowest individual qualifying score, ahead of Ashwaubenon’s Kayley Sjoholm (98), Pulaski’s Emma Jonas (100) and Ashwaubenon’s Dani Neel (100).
“She played pretty well,” Shawano coach Dean Kugler said. “She left a lot of shots out there, too.”
Beck had a solid start, carding 47 on the front nine.
“I think she was hitting the ball from the tee as well as she has all year,” Kugler said. “When I watched her, a lot of chips and putts she left on the course. But, obviously, she played well. I saw her hit some really good drives.”
It will be Beck’s first trip to sectionals.
As a team Shawano finished seventh with a score of 455.
“We shot about 20 strokes worse than we did the other day there,” Kugler said. “We didn’t play our best today.”
Junior Emily Smith shot 116, freshman Brianna Zook and junior Gabby Krueger both shot 121, and junior Sydney Schreiber had 126.
“It can be intimidating playing with some of these teams,” Kugler said. “I think the girls did OK, though.”
“We would have had to beat Green Bay Southwest/West, and that would have been hard to do,” Kugler said. “We would have had to shoot better than, probably, we have all year. That’s asking a lot out of a bunch of girls that just started the game.”
Preble’s Maddy Neumeier shot a 78 to earn medalist honors.
Notre Dame (332), Preble (361), Bay Port (406) and Green Bay Southwest/West (415) all qualified for the Division 1 sectional at Royal Scot Golf Course in New Franken on Tuesday.
“(Beck) said she went there this summer with her family,” Kugler said. “But we as a team have never played there.”
Kugler said Royal Scot is more open than Thornberry Creek, which could help Beck.
“It’s not as difficult as Thornberry, that’s for sure,” he said.
