The Bonduel High School volleyball team swept Iola-Scandinavia in three games in Tuesday’s Central Wisconsin Conference-8 tournament game to make up for a poor performance in Saturday’s pool play.
Bonduel (6-2 CWC) won 25-22, 26-24, 25-18 Tuesday thanks to changes on offense and a good effort by junior Hayley Pues.
“We mixed up our offense a little bit,” Bonduel coach Kim Bodoh said. “That seemed to be the spark the ladies needed to play to the best of their ability.”
Senior Jen Dowden led the Bears with 13 kills and six blocks. Senior Lexi Reinke added 11 kills and 23 digs. Junior setter Miranda Schmidt had 34 assist.
Perhaps the biggest impact, though, came from Pues, who had nine kills.
“I had been subbing back and forth between two different middles,” Bodoh said. “Hayley Pues, she just came alive tonight and really helped us a lot tonight. Her presence in the middle really helped a lot when Jenny wasn’t in the front row.”
Bonduel was in second place heading into the pool play on Saturday but finished a disappointing third. The final conference standings, which are based on a point system, were not available by the Leader’s press time Tuesday.
The Bears opened the tournament Saturday with a 2-1 loss to Shiocton (1-6), 25-18, 23-25, 23-25. In the second round, Bonduel beat Wittenberg-Birnamwood, 25-20, 25-21.
In the third round, the Bears fell to Amherst in three games (25-13, 15-25, 20-25).
“After Saturday’s big disappointment of a day, they practiced hard yesterday (Monday) and knew they had to take care of business,” Bodoh said.
Dowden led Bonduel with 32 kills and 44 digs on Saturday. Schmidt had 38 assists. Reinke had 36 digs and 20 kills. Taylor Weier had 18 kills and five aces.
Wittenberg-Birnamwood also rebounded for a disappointing pool play effort with a win Tuesday.
After a fourth-place finish Saturday, Wittenberg-Birnamwood (6-2) beat Manawa in three games Tuesday (25-12, 25-23, 26-15).
“Tonight, we had a well-balanced attack,” Wittenberg-Birnamwood coach Chris Nier said. “It makes a big impact when multiple girls are successfully attacking the ball. Our libero, Mikayla King, had a great night playing defense, and especially with communication.”
Taylor Nier led the Chargers’ attack with 12 kills and four aces. Lauren Bushman had nine kills. Danica Wendler had seven kills and three aces. Hannah Buntrock had six kills.
On Saturday, Wittenberg-Birnamwood beat Amherst (26-24, 25-16) in the first round and lost to Shiocton (27-25, 9-25, 26-24) in the third round.
Amherst (1-6), which beat second-place Shiocton (20-25, 25-21, 25-20) in the second round, took first.
On the other side of the tournament, first-place Weyauwega-Fremont (7-0) took first in pool play. Stevens Point Pacelli (4-3) was second, followed by Iola-Scandinavia (4-3) and Manawa (1-6).
