Germaine Schwaller has been in charge of the cookies and candy at the St. Michael’s Catholic Church Christmas Bazaar for four years.
This year’s bazaar will be held Nov. 22.
Schwaller was born in Chilton, graduating from Chilton High School. She attended Fox Valley Technical College in Appleton for computers. Schwaller worked for 32 years at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Appleton, first as a nurse’s aide, then in data processing, and then in accounting and payroll.
Schwaller and her husband of 34 years, Jim, who was head of data processing for the Appleton Public Schools, moved to a home they built on Legend Lake in 2002. They have two children and two grandchildren.
They are members of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Keshena. Schwaller has been the leader and is a member of the TOPS group in Shawano. She enjoys bowling and golf.
Q What do you do for the bazaar?
A “I’m in charge of the cookies and candies for the Christmas Bazaar. I let the members decide what they’re going to bring. There’s an article in the church bulletin. We used to have a sign-up but people didn’t sign up and still brought stuff. This year I’m making candy.”
Q What will be available?
A “A group of ladies get together and we make turkeys of peanut butter cups and candy corn. It’s a big seller. They can be used as a place setting. They are one of the first things that go. We are also making Pilgrim hats. On Monday we frost and decorate cutout cookies. I make a big batch of peanut butter balls. I probably make 12 dozen. Around 20 to 25 people bring stuff. Anyone who is willing to share their Christmas goodies, they’re welcome to bring them. The turkeys and Pilgrim hats are sold by the piece and the rest is by the pound. I get my ideas from magazines. I have four years of ideas cut out.”
Q Why do you volunteer your time?
A “I like working with the ladies and doing this for the church. It’s hectic, but it’s a lot of fun.”
