Every Christmas season, the Tilleda Timberwolves 4-H Club goes caroling. Co-leader Valerie Fehrman said the people they sing for really appreciate it.
“We’ve always done caroling,” she said. “You go to a lot of elderly homes and you can see the tears in their eyes. The kids see that. All the kids participate.”
They go to homes in Tilleda and the surrounding area singing “Jingle Bells,” “Silent Night” and “We Wish You a Merry Christmas.” Sometimes the carolers are given treats by the people they visit.
The 4-H’ers give the people they sing for baskets of candy and cookies that they made, along with oranges and apples. The club has a meeting afterward with a gift exchange.
“We make it a special day,” Fehrman said.
The Timberwolves have 18 members who do community service such as roadside cleanup in the spring. They sponsor a rabies clinic the second Saturday in February with reduced prices at the Seneca Community Center with a veterinarian from Birnamwood Veterinary Services.
“We try to do a lot of community service,” Fehrman said. “I think we do stress it more.”
The club earns money with their chili dinner at the Kitchen Maids fall craft sale. One year, they participated in a Tilleda rummage sale.
“We do a variety of things,” Fehrman said. “We all pitch in.”
The money earned mainly supports the club, but they have donated to the Tilleda food pantry and the Maple Lane Christmas party.
“4-H is a great experience for a lot of kids, and there’s a lot of things they can do,” Fehrman said.
The members can earn trips by making a resume and going through an interview. They work in the 4-H Food Stand and show at the Shawano County Fair. The club has to provide someone to watch the Junior Fair Building during the fair, and if they show animals, they must help clean the Coliseum, where the animals are judged.
Often they will bring their projects from the fair to a meeting to show other members.
Kerry Breitrick and Fehrman are co-leaders. Officers are Brooke Breitrick, president, Preston Teuchert, vice president, Olivia Danley, secretary, and Zachary Fehrman, treasurer. The club meets the first Monday of the month at the Seneca Community Center at 7 p.m.
