Lolly Bower is a member of the Friends of Shawano County Libraries Inc., which will be having a book sale from June 8-10 at the Shawano City-County Library in Shawano.
Bower was born in Minneapolis and grew up in the country outside Chicago. After graduating from Dundee Community High School, she attended Northern Illinois University in DeKalb for two years before marrying and raising three children. She returned to college at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, earning a degree in wellness and health in 1990.
Bower is a certified yoga teacher. She taught at Bellin, Shawano Medical Center and for Home & Community Education in Shawano since 1983. Currently she is teaching yoga to seniors at Verkuilen Chiropractic & Wellness Center in Shawano.
“I love teaching people my age to stay flexible and maintain balance. It also lowers blood pressure, calms the mind and relaxes,” she said.
Bower likes to swim, garden and read. She is a member of the Red Tent Book Club. She and her husband, Robert, who is retired, have been married 52 years and live in the town of Waukechon. They have two grandchildren.
Q How long have you been a member of Friends of the Library?
A “I’ve been on the board for two years and a member before that. I use the library constantly. My husband and I really love what the library does. It’s fun to work on the things they’re doing.”
Q What do you do?
A “I’m coordinating volunteers for the book sale. All the Friends work on the gift baskets at Christmas and the soup jars. I created a fairy tea party. The kids came with their moms, and the whole point was to give the children fun at the library and take some books home. If they write stories, the library will put them up.”
Q Do you volunteer anywhere else?
A “At the Navarino Nature Center, I helped create a fairy day camp. The focus is to have children playing outside in nature and using their imaginations. They create fairy houses in the woods. The next one is June 11. You need to call the center to register. I also volunteer for Shawano Area Matthew 25. I help with the bake sales and other small things where I can.”
Q Why do you volunteer?
A “I’m retired and it’s fun. I feel very grateful for a wonderful life and I want to give back to the community I’m living in.”
