Kathy Tucker make pies for the Christmas Bazaar at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Keshena. She was born in Antigo and graduated from Menominee Indian High School.
Tucker attended college for a year and then began a job at the Menominee Tribal Clinic, where she has worked for 30 years and is currently the coding specialist in the billing department.
She has been married for 20 years to Lyle, who is house manager at Maehnowesekiyah Treatment Center by Middle Village. They live in Keshena with their three daughters, Rayna, 20, a student at College of Menominee Nation; Ruthie, 15, at Shawano Community High School; and Riley, 14, at Sacred Heart Catholic School.
Their free time is spent at basketball practices and games. Lyle has coached all the girls at Sacred Heart and is now finishing up with Riley.
Q What do you do for the Christmas Bazaar?
A “I do baking. I mostly make cherry, apple and blueberry pies, and this year I‘m making pumpkin. I usually make them for every bake sale. The one in July is the biggest. I make 40 pies for that. I make the crusts from scratch. This Christmas Bazaar is mostly about cookies and candy for Christmas. My daughter Rayna makes cookies and candy. She decorates the cutout cookies.”
Q How long have you been doing this?
A “I guess maybe five years. Rayna has always been interested in baking. She makes birthday cakes for people. It started with making them for family. She wants to be a pastry chef. She learned a lot by herself with experimenting.”
Q How did you get started helping?
A “Since I was really young my mom did a lot of things for the church. When she was there, I was there as a helper. I’m also a lector and religious education teacher. On Sundays I open and close the church. All of the girls help at the church events.”
Q Why do you volunteer?
A “I like to help out. I help at the food pantry, too. I want to be a good example for my daughters. I enjoy working with the children and being a part of their lives. That’s inspiring to me to be with those kids. I like teaching them abut church, God, and His love for us.”
