The Oconto Falls High School girls track and field team weathered a cold wind and a strong push by Suring to win Monday’s Gillett Invitational in Gillett.
The Panthers scored 197 points and won nine events, edging out Suring (174) for first place.
“That’s an exciting win,” Oconto Falls coach Tammy Moynihan said. “We’re always excited coming over to this meet, given that it’s an all-girls meet.”
Oconto Falls’ Liza Leja won the 100-meter dash. Her time of 30 seconds won the 200-meter dash by .08 seconds over Bonduel’s Emily Sorensen.
“Leah Kasten and Jenny Spang were my sprinters,” Moynihan said. “I knew that Liza had some big shoes to fill.”
Bailey Wolf had first-place finishes in the 1,600-meter and 800-meter runs.
“She’s trying to work on her foot speed,” Moynihan said. “For her to come out and run the 800 well, that’s going to help her out in the future.”
The junior has primarily focused on the 1,600 and 3,200 runs in the past.
Kayla Virtues accomplished a personal best and won the shot put 37-5.
“She did a phenomenal job,” Moynihan said. “She threw well indoors, so to come out and throw 37-5, that’s very impressive.”
Moynihan said the field events give her team depth, and it’s what helped get the Panthers past Suring on Monday.
Oconto Falls also got wins in both hurdles events, despite missing Vanessa VanDenElzen because of injury. Josie Ausloos won the 100 hurdles, and Diane Moore, a freshman who had never run the event before, took first in the 300 hurdles.
Carolyn Machelski won the triple jump.
Courtney Heimerl, Az VanBellinger and Katie Stageman took firsts for Suring, which also won the 800 and 1,600 relays.
The 3,200 relay team of Karissa Rasmussen, Cassie Baranczyk, Becca Wolfe and Jenna Herzog earned Gillett’s only first place of the meet.
“To beat Oconto Falls was quite an accomplishment for those kids,” Gillett coach Bill DeJung said. “That’s probably the one I’m most pleased with.”
Rasmussen also finished second in the 800 run. Taylor Kohls took second in the discus.
Despite a stormy forecast, most of the rain held off until the end of the meet.
