To the editor:
Scott Walker’s had almost four years to do it his way. From his 250,000 jobs broken promise to the inept and wasteful WEDC, his first term has been filled with failure. Wisconsin has fallen in almost every measurable category when compared to our neighbors, particularly Minnesota, where the opposite political mindset prevails.
No matter how Walker and his apologists use slick ads and manipulate numbers to spin his awful record, his policies are not working. Worst of all, Wisconsin has become so polarized that neighbors and kinfolk dare not speak their minds to one another.
Even Walker’s “successes” are failures. He shrewdly pitted the private sector against public employees, using the politics of personal resentment to destroy collective bargaining. He’s made political patronage into a science, appointing unqualified people while surrounding himself with lawbreakers. And he sure manages to muzzle the press. Why won’t editors insist he answer troubling questions raised by those incriminating emails and his illegal secret email system?
Walker imposed a starvation diet on public schools but increased vouchers to private school students. He has dismantled environmental protections, ceding local control to out-of-state mining interests. He denies affordable health care insurance to tens of thousands by refusing to set up an ACA exchange. He refuses to support raising the minimum wage for folks who work long hours but struggle to make ends meet. He forces women to have expensive, unnecessary medical procedures. His tiny tax “cuts” disproportionately benefit the wealthy.
Perhaps most egregiously, Walker is deliberately suppressing the vote of minorities, seniors, the poor, while appearing only in carefully screened venues. What is he so afraid of?
Wisconsin is clearly broken, and many think it’s going to take a woman to fix it. Meet Wisconsin’s own Wonder Woman, Mary Burke, an intelligent, accomplished, honest leader who is in touch with average people like us. As our first female governor, Mary will restore our state to greatness. She’ll work with the private sector to put Wisconsin on a healthy path to economic growth, not grovel before the wealthy campaign donors Scott Walker courts as he pursues the presidency.
