Larsen returns from injury, gets victory
Senior McKenna Larsen pitched seven strong innings upon her return to the Oconto Falls High School softball team Thursday, striking out nine and allowing three earned runs to seal an 11-7 victory at Peshtigo (12-4, 10-1 Marinette and Oconto Conference).
“We were hoping that she would get a couple of games in before Regionals but her doctor wanted to see her before he would clear her,” said Oconto Falls’ coach Rachell Otto, who indicated the pitcher was given clearance May 21.
Oconto Falls (6-12, 5-11 Bay Conference) collected 16 hits through seven innings and scored more than one run in four of seven as the team claimed the win.
“She has worked hard all season and it was nice to see her back on the mound,” Otto said.
The Panthers jumped to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning with runs scored by leadoff hitter Liz Manns (2 for 4) and a McKenna Holman (2 for 4) home run. Manns had two stolen bases.
Ashley Terry was the Panthers’ leading hitter with four hits, three runs and three doubles. Larsen contributed to her own cause with three runs of her own, going 2 for 3 with a double and stolen base.
Gillett captures first victory
Behind a strong pitching performance by Gillett High School’s Bryce Cibulka, the Tigers won their first game of the season 9-3 against St. Thomas Aquinas Academy on May 19.
Cibulka pitched a complete game, striking out 12 batters, walking two and allowing four hits.
Gillett (1-10, 1-10 Marinette & Oconto Conference) trailed 3-2 before rallying for three runs in the fifth inning. Jeremy Cibulka (1 for 4, double) started the rally, advancing on a fielding error, and later scored the second of his three runs.
Eric Fischer was the Tigers’ leading hitter, collecting three hits and scoring two runs. Korey Badeu plated twice in a 2-for-4 game.
The Tigers added four insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning to help Bryce Cibulka seal the victory, with runs scored by Jeremy Cibulka, Badeu, Fischer and Wade Wasmund.
Bonduel shuts out Tigers in 6
The Gillett High School baseball team was unable to carry the momentum of its first victory into its game May 20 against Bonduel.
After scoring 9 runs in its win May 19 over St. Thomas Aquinas, the Tigers were shut out, 10-0, in six innings by Bonduel.
Both teams opted to play an additional inning to allow substitutes to get work in, leading to two unofficial runs scored by Derek Zahn and Eric Fischer for Gillett (1-11, 1-10 Marinette & Oconto Conference). The Tigers’ sole hits came from Brian and Derek Zahn and Eric Fischer.
STAA/Lena loses nail-biter
Kayla Boyle produced a solid pitching performance, striking out five and allowing two runs through six innings, but it was not enough as STAA/Lena lost 3-2 at Sevastopol on May 21.
Fielding errors by Sevastopol in the second inning led to runs by Brooke Peterson and Alyssa Hornick. Overall, though, STAA/Lena was unable to capitalize on scoring opportunities, stranding seven runners on base.
Riley Schultz was the team’s leading hitter with a 2-for-3 game.
