Junior McKenna Holman was one of three Oconto Falls High School softball players to be honored this week by the Bay Conference.
The infielder was named to the first team. Junior infielder Liz Manns earned a second-team all-conference selection, and catcher Maddie Kussow was given honorable mention.
“I was really excited and honored to be named to the first team after only hitting the entire season,” said Holman, who was limited by a right shoulder injury through the season.
According to coach Rochell Otto, all three players stood out in their own way this season.
“(Holman) was our clutch hitter all season, batting .708 with runners in scoring position, and was deserving of the honor,” Otto said.
Holman batted .493 with two home runs and 22 RBIs in 20 games for the Panthers. She also collected six doubles and struck out only four times.
Manns was surprised when she was informed of the honor Monday by school officials.
“I wasn’t really expecting it, but I try to stay humble,” Manns said. “Making it this far this year is amazing.”
Kussow said Manns was a key player down the final portion of the season.
“Liz is an all-around great athlete. She always picks me up, especially when I throw to second,” Kussow said. “Can always count on her to stop the ball (at shortstop).”
Manns stole a team-leading nine bases, batted .451 and scored 10 runs. She tallied six doubles.
Kussow was noted for her leadership skills behind the plate and willingness to move around the field. The senior catcher began the season at third base.
“It was a rocky experience at the start of the season,” Kussow said. “You got to keep everybody up and make them feel confident.”
Kussow said she tried keep her teammates communicating on the field.
“You got to talk it up,” she said. “If everybody talks on the field, then everything will come together.”
Holman praised Kussow’s leadership and timely hitting.
“She is a really good leader, and I can always count on her to move me onto the next base,” Holman said.
Kussow was second on the team with 18 RBIs. She batted .358.
Oconto Falls (7-12) finished seventh in the Bay Conference with a 5-11 record.
