The Gillett Library will host an open house at the new Community Square, 204 E. Main St., from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 21.
A back-to-school fashion show, with Ashley Britton, National Junior Teen Miss, as master of ceremonies, is scheduled from 4-5 p.m., followed by Skate the Square from 5-7 p.m. Participants are encouraged to bring their own roller skates.
There will be outdoor activities and music by Thurmont Ridge.
Grilled sandwiches, provided by the Gillett Civic Club, ice cream, provided by Rank’s Northern Distributing, and popcorn and lemonade, provided by St. John’s Lutheran Church, will be available. All proceeds benefit the Community Center/Community Square project.
The library purchased the BMO Harris Bank building next door in May after the bank closed. Library leaders have developed a three-phase plan to create library space and establish a community center and outdoor community square.
With the aid of an Outside the Box grant, the library received consultation and support for event and space design, event planning and material selection for the Community Square and Community Center.
The Gillett Library was one of 22 libraries and library systems in the country to receive this grant, sponsored by Redbox, the Project for Public Spaces, and Online Computer Library Center.
Through the grant, the library received $5,000 worth of materials, and it used $1,000 locally to purchase picnic tables and benches through Meunier’s True Value in Gillett.
