The Oconto County Historical Society will present its fifth annual cemetery walk, If Tombstones Could Talk, at 6 p.m. Sept. 24 and 25 at the Oconto Evergreen Cemetery.
Six people from Oconto County’s history will be portrayed during the evening’s walk: Lester Crane, first to die in combat in World War I; Hermina “Irish” Franks, one of Oconto’s star athletes who achieved success in life; Bernice Blank, writer of a weekly column for the Oconto Reporter; Nettie Dutton, a child survivor of the Peshtigo fire; Carl Richter, affectionately called “The Bird Man,” and George Farnsworth, a lumberman and whose monument is the tallest in the cemetery.
Tour-goers will be led through the cemetery by lantern-carrying guides. Following the walk, refreshments will be served in the G.E. Hall Annex, 917 Park Ave., Oconto.
Tickets for the walk will be on sale at Matravers Hardware, 919 Main St., Oconto, through Sept. 20. Cost is $6 per person.
Participants are encouraged to bring a flashlight and wear comfortable walking shoes. In case of inclement weather, the walk will be held at Oconto City Hall. WOCO Radio will announce a change in location, if needed.
