The Gillett Secondary School football team remained undefeated with a 45-28 victory at Wausaukee in Marinette & Oconto Conference play Friday.
Gillett (5-0, 3-0 M&O) scored seven rushing touchdowns, including six from senior Monte Noffke, who has scored 17 TDs in four games.
“Monte continues to run very well, but we were able to rely on our line to get us the yards we needed,” Tigers coach Rick Kamps said.
Noffke rushed for 224 yards on 24 carries to give him 625 yards for the season. He helped the Tigers to a 12-0 lead with 63- and 65-yard TDs in the opening quarter.
In the subsequent quarter, he added 2- and 5-yard scores in the second quarter to put the Tigers up 24-0. He also scored from 4 yards out in both the third and fourth quarters.
“Our offensive line played outstanding football and was able to control the line of scrimmage. I thought getting off to a quick start was critical for us,” Kamps said.
Gillett held the Rangers scoreless until quarterback Eric Arndt scrambled into the end zone on a 14-yard score with less than three minutes remaining in the first half.
Matt Peterson answered up with an 82-yard touchdown run to put Gillett ahead 30-7 with 1:25 left in the half.
“(Peterson) was able to keep his legs driving and bounce to the outside,” Kamps said.
Wausaukee (3-2, 2-1 M&O) came within nine points of the Tigers after Arndt threw for three touchdowns in the second half. He finished with 216 yards on 13 completions.
Kamps said Gillett needed to regain control of the line of scrimmage in the second half.
“Our line re-established the line of scrimmage and we were able to grind it out,” Kamps said. “They have a really explosive offense through the air and I knew going in that we needed to control the clock and keep their offense off the field.”
