Forestry consultants have until Nov. 5 to submit bids to assist the Suring School District with its forest management plan.
Greg Jaeger, Suring School director of building and grounds, said the district extended the deadline past Oct. 1 at the request of foresters who said their schedules allowed little time to prepare bids.
Suring is accepting bids for a variety of duties, including update of the district’s forestry plan, marking trees to be select-cut and managing the logging process. Logging will occur on 61 acres of the 160-acre forest located on Peshtigo Brook Road about 4 miles north of Suring.
The district has had two select-cuts since 2003 to keep the forest healthy and marketable.
In his meetings with foresters and mills, Jaeger said he learned the red pine in the forest is extremely valuable to the pulp industry in the Midwest. He predicted logging revenue will surpass the $13,700 earned in 2003 for 61 acres and $12,000 in 2008 for 33 acres.
The forest contains marked walking trails with exercise stations along the trails and a shelter and picnic area. The public is welcome to visit the forest, but hunting is not permitted.
