A resolution to raise the mileage rate for county employees 2 cents per mile was postponed by the County Board on Thursday.
Employees are reimbursed at 54 cents per mile, 2 cents less than the IRS rate. The county Finance and Insurance Committee recommended matching the IRS rate, which would cost the county about $5,000 more each year.
Supervisor Paul Bednarik said fairness was the issue. The 2-cent increase would provide employees the same reimbursement as others already receive.
Supervisor Rose Stellmacher spoke against the increase, saying county employees are paid well already.
“I think we’re fine right where we are with the mileage,” she said.
She called for closer monitoring of vehicle use for conferences and business travel.
Administrative Coordinator Kevin Hamann said employees in the health and human services department put on the most miles. The latest five-year average indicated employees were reimbursed for 242,900 miles annually.
Stellmacher recommended waiting until the county adopted a 2015 budget Oct. 30 and examined rates in neighboring counties before acting on the measure.
The board, with a 17-13 vote, agreed to delay the vote until Nov. 20.
